Reaching a writing state of mind
The past month has been the most action-packed yet since moving to Portland, and this site has definitely suffered because of it. It doesn’t help matters that I am incredibly bored with the design and the frankenstein method with which it was put together. I recently removed my of interest links and have moved to bookmarking everything with del.icio.us. Originally I split the two up because I could offer two separate feeds (something I never got around to doing) and because in the past I used del.icio.us only for reference sites and not “of the moment” links. After wasting time trying to find bookmarked sites (especially since of interest isn’t searchable) a few times, I’ve decided to consolidate. Eventually I’ll get around to exporting all the old links into del.icio.us, but for now if you’d like to browse around the archives, you can.
BePrivy has been blowing up, with 4 new clients this month, not to mention an extra 2, maybe 3 website projects to come out of that as well. I’ve been trying to move away from developing websites since that isn’t BePrivy’s focus but it’s hard to not evangelize (and thus land the job) when I know the alternative is most likely a non-standards based hodgepodge of code. The company isn’t exactly to the point where I feel comfortable turning away revenue either. Regardless, I’m looking forward to putting together a new portfolio in the upcoming months. I’ve got a triforce plan (woo Zelda reference) for corporate promotion/sales growth, but of course client work comes first. Just have to squeeze in the time somewhere. My iCal is looking quite psychedelic.
A (self-made) dark cloud hanging over my psyche is my ChangeThis manifesto, Why Passion Works. By a stroke of luck (or miscommunication) they gave me an extension on my due date, which really just gave me more time to push it off. I’ve always been a “wait ’till the last minute” person when it comes to writing, but I’ve been adamant about changing my ways on this project. Freemind has been hugely successful in helping me brainstorm, then organize those thoughts into intelligent segments. One of my biggest concerns is trying to write the manifesto so that it stands strong on its own but is also clearly a part of a bigger piece — the book I’m trying to turn it into. I’ve got a couple of weeks left, we’ll see how it goes. If only Khoi Vinh’s Blockwriter was a reality…
Good point! I’m supposed to be working on my ChangeThis proposal as well. It’s still being voted on but it looks like I’ve got a strong advantage. Gotta write!
Congrats on the #2 rank, I just gave it a vote — best get to it!
