Eric: Ooooh—I love SubEthaEdit too. Works great for multi-person brainstorming over Rendevous. I also use it to code in, although as I’m trying to learn Ruby on Rails, I’m feeling the need to switch over to TextMate.

Wow, you weren’t kidding- FreeMind is really great for getting those thoughts out!

I have a new favorite app for brainstorming. I had been using SubEthaEdit- which is a great text editor, but not really what I needed for mindmapping.

I should have mentioned that I am using Windows XP. I guess the key assigment is different between Mac and PC. Please ignore that part since I am completely ignorant of OS X. :)

TK: Thanks for the heads-up on turning off node selection via mouse over.

As far as creating a new child node goes, I’m not sure if I changed the keyboard setting or if it’s different on OS X (you didn’t say what OS you use), but on my machine it’s set to Tab. I don’t even have an ‘Ins’ key on my powerbook (although I remember it from my windows days…)

Great post. I cannot agree more about the usefulness of freemind.

However, I would like to comment on couple of things.

1) There is an option to turn off the node selection by mouse over.
Go to the
Tools-preference-Behavior-Selection Method
and change the current option to ‘By click’.

2) Creating a child node is done by ‘Ins’ not by ‘Tab’.
